Kepler visits the cardiologist and we get some relatively good news, though he'll spend the rest of the day very drugged. I also begin the original NES Metroid today and play about half, discussing my thoughts.

Glad Kepler's doing relatively well!
I played Metroid a number of years ago creating my own map on graph paper, and while it was a fun exercise, it was also kind of hilarious how much my map just... did not line up. Getting the right scale is hard in areas with no strict screen transitions!

I really enjoyed the Metroid playthrough! I owned the game for the NES as a kid, and sadly I no longer have a clue as to where all of our childhood NES games + console are (might be in a box in my basement or maybe my brother's, who knows- we at least never sold our games), but even if I did, I never did finish Metroid. At the point when I played it, I was way too young to even understand the English text in-game, so I probably just wandered, jumped, and pressed buttons. :P Really looking forward to (potentially, as We Do Not Make Promises at Georg Corp) other Metroid games on the channel!

On the note of Metroid, I never really gave the original a chance after trying it once and getting stuck. Playing along to the stream and the guide, it was actually really fun! Having played the rest of the entire main Metroid series (except Samus Returns) since, I felt like I appreciated it way more.
From here, I'm actually planning on giving a couple of other games a chance that I didn't before! As for NES games I think might be more approachable with a guide, I'm about halfway through Zelda II and having a great time finally, and as for Samus Returns on the 3DS, I think I'll play that along to any Metroid II streams coming up to compare directly heh
All that to say - thanks for changing my attitude on Metroid 1! I had a great time!

Metroid has evolved quite well in its series since its ‘87 NES release, and the one that revealed Samus to be a woman in many of its endings-amongst the beginning of video game female protagonists.
Especially in later games where detailed maps are included in-game; Samus having power bombs, x-ray scopes, spider ball and an assortment of tools to find hidden secrets & overcome obstacles; Samus herself being able to perform other actions including ducking, shooting while ducking, shooting diagonally, wall jumping, and tricks to maintain a speed boost or recover health using her arsenal; and so on.
The ‘87 NES game had none of it. It was exploring a new planet finding items to proceed further and intensive trying out items at several precise places to find hidden (and possibly important) stuff. Hence, a guide or map or a lot of note taking is best required.

The Metroid streams have been some of my favourite StephenPlays content for a while. I never played or even really heard of NES games till 2008 (I only knew Sega Master System owners growing up) but I was always really impressed by the original Metroid as someone who remembers the state of games in the 80s. I am really glad Stephen is playing the originals and ignoring all the people who miss the point about him wanting a historical experience and keep telling him to play the remakes.

Metroid doesn't aged that well imo, but if I put myself into that mindset from this era of videogames, I managed to enjoy it!
I didn't catch the streams, so i'll see the LP on RUclips!

Have you considered maybe introducing a baby kitten for Kep? My cat was not doing well but did so sooo much better with a brother for longer, and it also helped the grieving process once he finally did pass. Sending loving vibes for all 3 of you always ❤
